Our 6-year-old First Grader is a super speller! Ever since she learned how to write, I started doing spelling session to her. It helps that I was her very first teacher academic-wise. I homeschooled her in Kindergarten and we did a lot of spelling sessions together. Today, she is a First Grader in public school and she feels bad that there is no spelling session done in her class. We have talked with her class teacher and we learned that Spelling has been omitted by the WI Department of Public Education. I understood the reason why it was so but still feel bad because I would have loved my daughter to practice her spelling skills continuously.
Thus, what I do is just give her some spelling session when she’s home on a No School Day or on weekends. A couple months ago, I just ignored her when he told me that she really wished there is a spelling session at school. However, when she stayed indoor during recess a couple weeks ago, she was acquainted with a Spelling dictionary at the principal’s office where she stayed during recess time. When she got home that day, she told me she has read the dictionary and a spelling dictionary at the principal’s office and she’s wondering if I could buy one for her.
Sure enough, I bought her a Literature and Language Spelling Dictionary and a Webster’s Dictionary online because I was ecstatic to see a lot of interest in her. When books were shipped, she was so thrilled to finally have them.

She got so excited that night that the following day, she told her teacher what her mom bought her and that she really wants to join in a Spelling Bee contest. Her teacher was so amazed that after the class that day, she was handed down a page called “How to Study for a Spelling Bee” by her teacher which accordingly came from the principal.

My 6-year-old super speller is serious on this thingy! This sure gives me more tasks to do as a teacher here at home but all for our kiddo who continually does amazing things academically, I have all my strength and ability ready to support and nurture her.
